The Story Behind Happy Handyman

Decades of European craftsmanship, a passion for problem-solving, and a journey that led from Belgium to the beautiful island of Crete.

Bringing European Standards to the Greek Islands

In 2025, I made the move to Crete, officially basing myself near Hersonissos. Establishing Happy Handyman in Crete allowed me to bridge a massive gap in the local market. Many expats, holiday home owners, and local businesses struggle to find a reliable, multi-skilled tradesman who communicates clearly in English or Dutch and works to strict European safety codes.

Property maintenance in Crete requires specific knowledge. The intense summer heat puts massive strain on A/C and ventilation systems, the salty sea air accelerates corrosion on outdoor fittings, and the winter dampness requires highly secure roofing and electrical wiring. Because I have hands-on experience with complete renovations and new builds, I don't just patch problems—I implement long-lasting solutions designed to withstand the harsh Mediterranean elements.

A Lifelong Dedication to the Trades

My journey in construction and technical repair didn't begin in a classroom—it started in the field. Growing up, I spent my weekends and school holidays working alongside my father, a skilled technician who taught me that quality is not an option; it’s a standard. Following my formal education and certification in Belgium, I spent 8 years with a small firm where it was often just my employer and me. There was no one else to rely on; we had to solve a vast range of complex issues ourselves, which became the most valuable training school I could have ever asked for.

Eventually, I started my own company, keeping the team tight and the quality high. It was during this period that I named one of my ventures "Spirto." While the word literally means "matchstick" in Greek, it carries a much deeper meaning in our culture—to be called spirto is to be sharp, clever, and "quick as a spark." I always felt the name perfectly captured the essence of my work: the ability to think rapidly on my feet, spark creative solutions to unexpected building problems, and bring bright, reliable energy to every job site.

After years of successful operations in Belgium, I sought a change of scenery. I moved to Naxos, and in 2025, I arrived in Crete. Bringing that "Spirto" mindset—that sharp, solutions-oriented approach—to the near-Hersonissos region has been incredibly rewarding. Whether I am helping a local family or an expat property owner, I bring that same spark to every repair and renovation I undertake.
